Fire Extinguishers

The fire extinguisher has improved hugely in recent years and, with many important developments in extinguishants, there is a type now available for virtually any fire situation.

The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 applies to virtually every type of premises and has been the Law since October 2006. In effect, if any person will enter the premises, it is the legal duty of the premises owner/manager to ensure their safety by supplying and maintaining the correct fire extinguishers. To decide what to install, there are classes of fires and different extinguishers have the ones they are good for listed on top of the front label. A quick guide is as follows:

Class A (wood, paper, textiles, etc)

Recommended extinguishers include Water, Water with additive, AFF Foam spray, ABC Dry Powder.

Class B (flammable liquids such as petrol, spirits and diesel)

Recommended extinguishers include AFF Foam, ABC Dry Powder, CO2 (carbon dioxide).

Class C (flammable gas)

Recommended extinguishers include Dry Powder but only when the gas can be turned off.

Class D (flammable metals)

Recommended extinguishers include M28 Powder, L2 Powder and other specialized Powders.

Fires involving electrical equipment (there is no 'class E' in the UK)

Recommended extinguishers include CO2 (carbon dioxide), FE36 automatics and ABC Dry Powder.

Class F (deep fat cooking oil)

Recommended extinguisher is only the Wet Chemical and no other.

Fire extinguishers are not door stops. They should be properly fixed to the wall or mounted on special fire extinguishers stands. There should also be an Identification Sign above each extinguisher.

A monthly visual inspection should be done in-house and recorded in a fire log book and a Qualified extinguisher technician should perform a maintenance service to BS: 5306 once a year (or more if necessary).

Fireshield's extinguishers are manufactured to the highest possible quality and have genuine full BAFE (British Approvals for Fire Equipment) certification, BSi Kitemark to BS EN3 and CE Mark (a legal requirement with the Pressure Equipment Directive - PED).

Be aware that many cheap foreign imports claim these approvals but they can't often prove them so call BAFE and BSi to check if you are not sure. You do not want to trust your life to a cheap fire extinguisher with no real approvals.

In addition, we appreciate that online price savings are so low that you need a little re-assurance so we give, as standard, three guarantees:

  • 5 Year Manufacturer Warranty
  • Low Price Guarantee
  • 100% Satisfaction Guarantee

Fire extinguishers are not only a legal requirement but, should you ever experience a fire at work or at home, you can feel safer knowing that you have one to hand. Don't wait until after the fire.
